Why choose this program?
Geneticists, molecular biologists and physiologists have provided valuable insight into how cells and systems function. Biologists have helped improve human life in many ways, including the discovery of antibiotics and other medicines, a better understanding of the cellular processes leading to cancer, and the development of new crops.
Information from the Human Genome Project is being used to identify genes and proteins involved in many disease processes. However, there are still many unknowns. Studying biology provides a background for students to evaluate and understand new discoveries and to make informed decisions in the use of scientific knowledge to benefit all living organisms.
The faculty and staff of the Department of Biology provide an environment where students at all levels can explore, discover, and learn biology through coursework and research. We place a strong emphasis on high-quality classroom teaching. Professors teach lecture and laboratory courses and conduct research with undergraduate students.

What will you learn?
What has become known as the Biotechnology industry has been going through some transforming changes that mandate more sophisticated workforce training at many levels. In order to place central Indiana at the forefront in the preparation of a suitable workforce for existing industry as well as a flexible training program that may be attractive to biotechnology industries considering a move to Indiana, IUPUI has developed education-training programs at the bachelor’s level.
This program has been developed in collaboration with the several local biotechnology industries to ensure relevance and appropriateness of the education-training program content.
What will you do?
The program includes an extensive industrial internship that, along with the basic and applied courses in biotechnology, meet industrial objectives for preparation for positions in the biotechnology industry. The curriculum of the bachelor’s degree also allows sufficient flexibility within the major and with electives to meet basic requirements for application to most graduate and professional programs.
